Only one at a time

Your dog or your family of dogs will be the only ones in the grooming studio while the grooming experience is underway. There won’t be chaos and anxiety and other dog folks waiting stressed out in cages. This is such a nice way to work. Appointments make this possible, so that’s how we have set up our shop. Sometimes this means a little wait for a grooming time, so it’s always best to get on a regular grooming schedule. With scheduling we can even accommodate special events like weddings and family visits. Your dog will be fresh and ready and looking his best for all the photos.

It’s quite a stress reliever to have things set up and planned out a little bit. Just ask Chips. He knows his supper comes at about the same time every day.

Outside of a dog….

a book is man’s best friend. Inside of a dog, it’s too dark to read.

So said the gifted and insightful Groucho Marx, comedian and probably by necessity good reader of non-verbal gestures, body language and emotions to better tune his spontaneous comedic art.

I’m no comedian but I specialize in reading the non-verbal communications offered by dogs to better move in their world. I make the grooming experience more successful and stress free for both me and your dog by listening and watching all the things your dog is telling me. His world and what he thinks of mine are displayed in countless gestures and subtle noises.

Am I a dog whisperer? Who knows. But I am a devoted dog listener and watcher, and I can communicate in kind.

Toto too!

dscn0568Who is that little dog in the arms of that man? Why that’s Toto! Our Toto (Tiger)! He helped Dorothy (Alexa Nichols) get back to Kansas and escape that wicked witch!

Smithson Valley High School’s recent production of The Wizard of Oz was a stunning success, an exhilarating interpretation of that classic American musical. Tiger played his part as Toto flawlessly (almost!) and didn’t forget a single line. Talk about releasing your inner show dog! The cast and crew were so sweet with him, and I thank them so much for their kindness and understanding.

Tiger is a six year old rescue Cairn mix from the Bulverde Area Humane Society, and the sweetest most dedicated canine friend I’ve ever had.

Release Your Inner Show Dog

We can help you do that!  Groucho Marx said “Outside of a dog, a book is man’s best friend. Inside of a dog, it’s too dark to read.” Well, it may be too dark to read but there is an inner glow and pride in every dog. We as owners and groomers can help that glow show on the outside, whether it’s joy released from catching a ball or Frisbee, from running the agility course while watching the happy owner, or from being clean and fresh and beautiful and getting all those extra pets that a show dog deserves.

The ball and Frisbee will be up to you but Canine Comforts is here to help with the groom. See the transformation. Release that Show Dog!

Lost & Found Chihuahuas: Tiny!

dscf0111Meet Tiny, our newest guest. Today Tiny is ready to be interviewed for a new home.

Tiny is 4 years old and weighs a little over four pounds. He should weigh six or so pounds based on his size, so we expect that with our love and good nutrition he will bulk up.

Tiny is perfectly healthy and only suffers from neglect. He is house trained and friendly and loves his bed and little treats. He is a very sweet boy, doesn’t seem afraid of other dogs and really wants just to love and trust.

If you have a place for Tiny in your heart and home please give us a call at 210-887-8224. And as usual we are accepting donations large and small toward the care and rehabilitation of these little guys.

Lost-and-Found Chihuahuas: Princess

Princess

Princess

Princess has had a hard time lately. Her sweet loving owner suddenly died. Then, while in the “care” of new owners, she was badly burned on her back.

Princess has recovered, mostly, here at Canine Comforts, and has shown how sweet and loving she is despite what has happened. She really is a good little dog who deserves all the love a devoted new owner could give her.

Princess is being sponsored by the Bulverde Area Humane Society. Any donations for her care will be greatly appreciated by that good organization. Their number is 830-980-2247. Meanwhile, Princess is available for adoption to the right person and can be seen here at the shop. She is five years old, weighs about five precious pounds, is house broken, and certainly is a real princess of a dog.

Hadji update, Lost-and-Found Chihuahuas

Hadji has been adopted by a nice young family in east Bulverde. Now he runs in the backyard with another Chihuahua, two Border Collies and a two year old big brother. They seem to be pretty happy together, one more success story!

Now I’m sure there will be more little souls like Hadji who will pass through our lives on their way to a new home. Wish everyone well by closing your eyes for just a moment and making a vision of a happy little puppy face. Thinking love creates love.

Meet Hadji

dscn0152Lost-and-Found Chihuahuas

Hadji is not so shy now so we got his picture for all to see. He has a nice personality, already asking to be a lap dog and devoted. He weighs 6.4 pounds, is house trained and knows how to use a dog door.

Hadji spends the day with the other three Chihuahuas and one Cairn Terrier in my grooming shop. He has always been polite and does not show any aggression or bossiness at all. He met the cats this morning with casual passing interest.

A kind friend to canines (Thank you MC!!) has sponsored Hadji’s neutering, shots and microchip. After that ordeal is over Hadji has agreed to be interviewed for his new home.

Hadji is a lucky little boy. He will be cared for and loved the rest of his life. There will be others like him, and any donations are welcome to help make it happen.

Lost-and-Found Chihuahuas

Anyone who knows me knows how much I love Chihuahuas. They are brilliant dogs, smart, personable, very aware of their environment and the people therein. Small and portable, easy to feed and alert, they can be daring little clowns.

South Texas, perhaps by virtue of proximity to primal lands, has become a popular place for raising, caring for and sadly, alas, abandoning these little gems. It’s too easy, it seems, to cast them aside when inconvenience strikes.

Yesterday a little brindle boy, lost, cold, hungry, frightened, was spotted by a friend of mine and was thus rescued and brought into the fold. My favorite veterinarian, Dr. Madigan of the Animal Hospital of the Smithson Valley, has checked him out and deemed him sweet, healthy and lovable. After his ordeal (he had been observed and uncatchable for a few days) this little dog is remarkably friendly and so wants to be trusting.

He is too shy right now for pictures, but soon his little face will be on this website for all to see. After his neutering, shots, chip etc. he will be available for adoption to some very lucky family or person.

Any donations to help off-set medical expenses for these little guys are very welcome. Checks of any size can be made out to Canine Comforts with “Lost-and-Found Chihuahuas” in the memo section. A little love and kindness goes a long way when you only weigh five pounds.
